About Me
Hello! My name is Abby, and I am a mentor for Beyond Education. I am originally from Oklahoma City, OK, and currently live in San Antonio. Being “Sooner born and bred,” I attended the University of Oklahoma and received my BA in Letters and English. After graduation, I went on to teach English as a second language in Jakarta, Indonesia for three years. My career in classroom teaching began in Brooklyn, NY where I also completed an MA in Special Education Reading from St. John’s University. I moved to San Antonio in 2018 and am currently working to complete an MA in English Literature from UTSA. I love literature, traveling, and spending time with my family and dogs. I am excited to be a mentor for Beyond Education because the one-on-one environment of mentoring allows me to be highly effective. Those I’ve had the opportunity to mentor or tutor can achieve their goals and sharing their success in a personal environment has been rewarding.
When looking back on my educational journey, I have learned many things that have helped me gain better insight into myself as a learner and mentor. For instance, my biggest obstacle was finding my academic confidence despite being a high-achieving student. My biggest success was my ability to manage my time and focus. You can find me de-stressing by walking my dogs. During my time as a mentor, I hope to support students who struggle with confidence and help students with intellectual insecurities overcome them. I can validate students’ feelings and let them know it’s normal. My strengths of time management and focus are ones I can model for others and explain the strategies I’ve used to develop these skills.
