Most colleges require letters of recommendation to gain a more comprehensive understanding of a student’s character, academic abilities, and potential beyond what’s reflected in grades and test scores. Think carefully about who you would like to ask to write one. We recommend getting at least two letters from teachers, with at least one in a subject that aligns with your major (i.e. engineering major should get a letter from your physics or math teacher). Asking in person is always best, however not always possible. We have a copy of an email template here to request a letter of recommendation.
-Choose a teacher from an academic class which you have a personal connection or
from a class that relates to your major.
-Choose a teacher who has seen you grow this year.
-Choose a coach, mentor, boss, clergy, someone that has seen your dedication outside
of school hours.
Keep in mind that letters of recommendation are often uploaded directly to the application platform by the recommender, so you will likely never see the letter yourself. In addition, if you apply early, the deadline for recommendation letters is later than the deadline for the rest of your application, so don’t stress if your letters are not submitted until after the rest of your application.
