Navigating the New Essay Changes for University of Texas Austin Application 2024-2025

As the 2024-2025 application cycle approaches, prospective students aiming to join the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) will notice some significant changes in the essay requirements. UT Austin, known for its dynamic and diverse community, continues to refine its application process to better understand applicants’ backgrounds, aspirations, and potential contributions to the university. Here’s a detailed look at the new essay prompts and how to tackle them effectively.

Overview of the Changes

For the upcoming application cycle, UT Austin has revised its essay prompts to provide a more comprehensive view of applicants. The changes reflect a shift towards understanding the holistic experiences of students, emphasizing personal growth, challenges overcome, and the unique perspectives each student brings.

The new personal statement (or some call it the “college essay”) prompt is:

Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. (650 word limit)

The updated supplementary essays are:

1. Why are you interested in the major you indicated as your first-choice major? (250-300 word limit)

2. Think of all the activities — both in and outside of school — that you have been involved with during high school. Which one are you most proud of and why? (Guidance for students: This can include an extracurricular activity, a club/organization, volunteer activity, work or a family responsibility.) (250-300 word limit)

The first supplementary essay is a stalwart, it’s been on the UT Austin first-year application for many years. It’s the second one that is new, and it’s taking the place of the former two supplementary essays. So now applicants only have to write 2 supplementary essays instead of 3 (Yay!).

Other Major Changes to UT App?

Yes! UT Austin announced this spring that they are going back to Test Mandatory policy. This means all applicants are required to submit and SAT or ACT score to be considered.

The updated essay prompts for UT Austin’s 2024-2025 application cycle offer a unique opportunity to showcase your individuality, resilience, and readiness to contribute to the university’s vibrant community. By approaching each prompt thoughtfully and authentically, you can craft compelling essays that highlight your strengths and aspirations.
